This second chapter of the National Veteran's Freedom Mural is coming to life on the side of American Legion Post 157 in Churubusco, Indiana. Spanning a massive 150-foot alleyway, the mural moves beyond traditional wartime imagery to capture the raw, personal, and heroic stories often left untold.
We have nearly completed the expansive backdrop, with six veteran faces already watching over the space and many more to come. At its heart, the mural features eight foreground figures depicted in moments of profound humanity: a soldier’s tearful homecoming, a life-saving rescue into a medical chopper, and quiet acts of bravery that define the veteran experience.
With a special focus on the many paratroopers who call "Busco" home, this location blends elegant grandeur with branch-specific stories. From the National Veteran’s Freedom Mural logo and the U.S. 250th Birthday emblem at the entrance to the tribute for Gilbert Davis the hometown hero the Post is named after, every inch represents a community’s gratitude. This isn’t just a painting; it’s a safe, vibrant space for veterans and families to share their "behind the scenes" stories—focusing not on the devastation of war, but on the enduring strength and emotional bonds that follow.

We still need more veteran portraits to make this mural truly special. Our massive 150-foot canvas has plenty of room for hundreds of more faces, and we want to go beyond just a portrait. With each submission, any personal content related to the veteran's service is highly welcome—whether it’s background imagery of a chopper, plane, tank, or their entire platoon. Whatever helps visually tell their unique story and captures the essence of their service is enc

ouraged as we continue to build this living archive.
