When you're lounging in the old "Gin Mill", Once more back from foreign shores, and you speak of this hill or that hill, and you're addin' up your scores; Just take this down in your stock of notes, and don't forget to drive it home, 'bout the battles that were fought and won just a few miles south of Rome.

This happened on January morning, a nice day for the month; with the boys all loaded on landing Craft, A waitin' for the jump. Their destination was unknown, their thoughts were that of home, when they hit the beaches just a few miles south of Rome.

The beaches were all littered with the implements of war, and the guns began their rumbling, on the slopes just up from shore. The Foe returned their fire; He was kicking up the Foam. This all happened on the beaches just a few miles south of Rome.

..Here they come: There they are! You could hear those doughboys shout. The planes were twistin' and a divin' and a zoomin' all about. Those Ack Ack guns did thunder- They were sending "Jerry" to his doom, For the boys were there for business Just a few Miles South of Rome.

Now when you've summed your battles up, and you've pictured it my way, just raise your glass and drink to them who fought this bloody fray. And when the "Gin Mills" do close, and you begin to amble home, Just close your eyes in remembrance of those white crosses south of Rome.
