The Elf Vigilante
(Xilva Backstory)
PG1
In the time when the spiders killed all the red witches but one, there was a Harry the Red Wizard who is not the same as the current Harry the Red Wizard. The first Harry discovered that the coven of red witches who lived in his part of the woodlands of mystery were secretly in the service of the Spellbook; the very being who had once been the sorceress Iniquitie. Their rituals were designed to help them locate the book that had been hidden for so long.
Harry tried to warn the Master Magician of this, but for some reason whenever he brought up the name of Iniquitie or that the witches were trying to find The Spellbook, the Master Magician would change the subject. Unbeknownst to Harry, it was part of the powerful magic that actually kept the spirit of Iniquitie bound to the shape of a box.
Having nowhere to turn, Harry enlisted the aid of a young elf girl to keep track of the red coven. That girl was Xilva and she was in the line of the stoic watcher elves whose jobs were to stay still and watch. They were incredibly talented in camouflage and stealth, but never attacked or took part in anything they witnessed, just recorded it for historical purposes.
The stoic line believe that history will take place around them and interference will alter history's natural path irrevocably. It is considered a sin for them to interfere. So, Xilva did her duty and stealthily watched the witches. She recorded their practices and Harry would read her records.
Eventually, Harry began to suspect that the coven was quite close to actually tracking down The Spellbook. Though their rituals did not take them away from their camp, they did reveal secrets in the red fog that bordered the southeastern woodlands of mystery and the red swamp. One of the secrets that was revealed to the red witches was that there were several spellbooks hidden around Midieville. This was one of the many ways Leon tried to ensure the book would not be found again after he took it from Teento and hid it away.

Leon never told Harry where the book was, nor any other Wizard for that matter, but he did tell the wizards that he hid many books, so if any of them found one, they wouldn't automatically cause a stir. When Harry saw in Xilva's records that the witches had uncovered this secret, he knew he had to act fast! Harry, being the wizard over animals, called spiders to stop the witches by paralyzing them with their venom.
Harry's spiders bit the witches one by one. Xilva recorded all of this, but stayed still and silent, just watching. As the witches fell, Harry was mortified to learn that it wasn't from paralysis as he had instructed, but the spider bites had killed them all. All except one. But Xilva recorded this too.
She recorded how late the night before the spiders came to attack, Naaj sought the red fog alone. In the fog, she was shown the plan of Harry's to paralyze her sisters. So, instead of getting paralyzed, Naaj plucked one hair from each of her sisters' heads and used it to brew herself a potion of protection. This potion in turn would make each sister take on the wounds Naaj has sustained.
Since the spiders bites did not cause Naaj to fall, more and more spiders bit her and as the venom filled up in her body, it caused her sisters to die from overdoses of the toxin in theirs. Naaj knew this would happen and she wanted to use this opportunity to get rid of Harry once and for all. Her love for her coven was merely a love for herself and she cared not for her fellow witches. Xilva recorded all of this and watched still and silently.
When Harry was sent to the Master Magician, Xilva watched as Naaj's glee turned to bitterness. She expected the Master Magician to strip Harry of his power and rank, but did not think that he would appoint a new Harry the Red Wizard in his place. Naaj's plan had backfired and she had to leave the woodlands of mystery before the new Red Wizard would have a chance to find out what she had done. Xilva watched all of this and recorded it, staying still and silent.

Xilva, knowing that Naaj was making history, secretly followed Naaj, staying hidden the whole time. She kept records of her every step and saw as Naaj tracked down the elf who used to be Harry the Red Wizard. Xilva silently watched as Naaj killed her friend and made it look like he died of old age. Xilva laid on a tree bough still and did not follow as Naaj left the woodlands of mystery. She could no longer stay still and silent. Xilva cried out loudly in mourning for her friend. This too she recorded.
Then she put her pen and pad away and ran to the elf city, to Tober, the head of the stoic order. She handed him her records and sat, legs on top of one another, back stiff, unblinking, as he read. When he had finished he handed her records to her and pointed to the mantra on the wall of the hut, 'watch still and silently, record everything.' He then wrote down what had transpired and turned to leave her with her thoughts.
"How can I continue to be silent and watch," Xilva asked aloud, "How can I knowing I could have saved the whole world?"
The head of the stoic order of elves turned with anger back to Xilva, saying nothing, he took her pen and pad, tore them and wrote directly on the wall. He wrote the current day and time and next to that he wrote 'Xilva the elf broke her vows and was immediately excommunicated from the order.'
No other words had ever been written on the wall, all that ever was on that wall was the mantra. Xilva knew she was alone and had to choose her own path now.
Tober could not give her advice, console her, give her a chance for recompense, all he could do was record.
Xilva left the elf city. She knew she couldn't take her records and she would not be welcome into any of the other elven orders. Though, she remembered when she was very young, barely able to walk, she was given the chance to choose her order. She recalled trying archery and being fairly good for a child, so Xilva went to her parents' house to say goodbye and took her great-grandfather's bow and quiver of arrows as she left. Her parents did not wish her well, nor did they bestow her with love, they were ashamed at her for breaking her vows. Her mother saw Xilva take the bow, and out of kindness looked away.

Xilva grabbed a phoenix from the edge of the city as she left and sent it to Tober. The message the phoenix whispered in his ear was, "Xilva the elf makes a new vow to become a part of history and stop the oncoming evil." It is said that this message was written on the wall below her name.
Xilva tracked Naaj to her teepee and told her all she had learned. Naaj laughed at her and called her an inventive child. Naaj had a line of customers when Xilva accused her, and didn't want to be seen as the evil witch which she truly was. Naaj tossed a puff of orange powder in the air and Xilva suddenly found herself waking up high on a mountain.
"You don't know anything little elf girl!" Naaj said. She was hovering over Xilva on her broom and then flew off cackling. Xilva found that she was in the Dragon Mountains. She had barely ever left the woodlands of mystery twice in her life, and each time following Naaj only as far as the golden city just north of the woodlands' border. She quickly realized that in many ways, Naaj was right; Xilva didn't really know anything. She didn't know how to climb down from the mountain, how to fend for herself, or even what direction the golden city was.
However, Xilva did realize that what little she did know might be helpful. She knew how to blend in and be quiet, to watch and record. Though her pad and pen had been taken from her, her mind could still remember. So, as Xilva slowly made her way down the mountain, she learned a lot about dragons, that some were really long and had no legs, only arms, some preferred water, some loved treasure. Dragons didn't just breathe fire either, they breathed acid, and water, ice, and a very few breathed an odd knowledge.
Xilva made her way west and eventually found the sprite village. Sprites are small magical people with bug wings instead of arms. Xilva thought they looked funny, and she didn't fear them, so she didn't bother hiding from them. She learned that their
magic was mostly centered around levitation since they didn't have arms. She told them her tale and the sprites seemed to believe her.

The Sprites told Jeff the Purple Wizard the story of Naaj and Harry but he didn't believe it. Word had reached the wizards that a rogue elf was plotting against an innocent sorceress named Naaj. When the sprites returned to Xilva doubting her story, she knew it was time to leave. But before she left, an old sprite craftsman named Cenalwer came to her and told her that he believed her and had made something to help her on her quest. It was a pair of gauntlets made from magic undying leaves, they would help her never miss with her bow.
Xilva did her best to hug the small foot-and-a-half sprite and set off westward. Xilva still didn't know that she was about as far from her home as one can be in Midieville and headed into one of the most dangerous places the world has to offer, the forbidden caves of the minotaurs!
As Xilva continued to traverse the mountains westward, they lowered to large hills and became filled with caves. She knew that bears in the southeast woodlands would sometimes sleep in caves, so she thought maybe she could seek refuge in them as well. She quickly learned that was a bad idea. Angry minotaurs slept in the caves, and the thing minotaurs hate most is being woken up!
It took decades for Xilva to traverse the forbidden caves (though the average lifespan for an elf is about 1,000 years, so she didn't waste away her whole life in the caves). Ages ago Bruce the Teal Wizard enchanted the caves to be interconnected to one another with no rhyme or reason. One cave entrance could lead to the exit of any other cave. So, going into a cave would send the trespasser just about anywhere in the whole cave system. This system was devised by Bruce to help keep the Minotaurs lost in the caves and therefore, not roaming around other creatures' dwellings. Though, some of the more intelligent minotaurs have figured out a system to at least get them into the Greckle realm.
Xilva eventually also found her way to the far west and the Greckle Keep. The Greckle Keep is a huge city carved right into the rock. Greckle's average between 9 and 10 feet tall, so the keep is just massive for any average height person like an elf (and elves range on the tall side of human height). Xilva knew she had lost many years and wanted desperately to find Naaj, but still had no idea where she was or where Naaj would be. As luck would have it, Xilva found the secret stairs to the Pegasus Kingdom. In ancient times, the pegasus' lived where the Greckles now call home. Since the pegasus' are so secretive, most people don't even believe they ever existed.

However, Xilva climbed the hundreds of stairs at the northwestern most part of the world and reached their kingdom in the clouds. The Pegasus King (whose name is
in horse and unable to be written down or pronounced by most creatures) greeted her with kindness and told her how the order of stoic watchers was formed by himself and an ancient elf. Though the elves have adjusted the vows to be so strict, and the Pegasus King was sorry that she had been kicked out. He had watched her and told her that he was not the only one. Tober, the head of her order had followed Xilva on all her adventures, watching silently and recording. She had truly become part of elven history.
The Pegasus King communed with Tober and though the head of her order would not allow her back into the fold, the Pegasus King said that he knew she had Tober's blessing as well as his own.
The Pegasus King took Xilva's bow in his mouth and chewed it up and swallowed it. He also took her quiver and ate that as well. Xilva was saddened because they had been her great-grandfather's. But he explained to her that he had not truly digested them but merely used his magic to transport them safely back to her parents' home. Then, he gave her a bow that looked like a stretched-out Pegasus. Her new bow would have infinite arrows, and she wouldn't need to carry a quiver.
The Pegasus king took Xilva on his back and flew him down to the lava lands. He told her that if she stayed there, she would eventually find Naaj. She made a home for herself among the Pyroclasts, a people made of fire and lava. They were really interesting and odd to Xilva. They worked in lava and one day started forming lava bricks and building a castle. Xilva didn't know why, but she did her best to help. Eventually, the Evil King Anell arrived at the site followed by The Black Knight and Naaj!

Xilva was about to charge the castle, but one of the Pyroclasts, Neza, stopped her. Neza told Xilva that she couldn't just destroy Naaj inside the castle. It was guarded with lava magic and only other lava magic could fight in there. So, Neza gave Xilva, Arris, an ancient Pyroclast sword. It's blade was a shiny black made from solid obsidian, a volcanic glass. Neza explained that normally a blade made from obsidian would be brittle and break at the first blow. However, Arris was an enchanted blade and created to destroy evil.
Xilva entered the black castle looking for Naaj but only found Anell. Anell called for his guards and only The Black Knight came. The Black Knight told Xilva that Naaj had been sent to the Magenta Forest and she'd better not be here when Naaj got back. Well, Xilva decided to employ her old skills and watched and waited. Xilva disguised herself as a painting of Anell right in the middle of his throne room and waited for the right opportunity.
Naaj returned from the Magenta Forest and had a book. Xilva knew it must be The Spellbook. She could tell that Naaj suspected as much too, but wasn't certain.
Xilva decided that it was too risky to take on Naaj, Anell, and The Black Knight by herself, so she stayed in the disguise and waited even longer. Before too long she learned that Marvin the Blue Wizard found out about the book and would soon be coming to duel Naaj for it. Xilva knew her chance would come soon, but she also knew that Marvin might not believe her about Naaj. So, Xilva continued to wait, watch, and listen.

The Dwarf of Kindess and Caring
This tale takes place in the age before the age of Wizards, maybe even an age before that. It is so hard to tell when one age stops and another begins. The time of this story is not that important, just that it was so long ago that most of those that were around then aren't around anymore and the few who are have probably forgotten.
I think the dwarf for this story was called Emlirn, but it was so long ago, and that name has not been spoken or thought of in so long that I could be mistaken. Let's just agree that it was Emlirn and we'll proceed as such. Today dwarves are craftsmen, builders and laborers of all sorts, but in the days when Emlirn was very young dwarves were carpenters only.
As most in Midieville know, dwarves are all male and do not take to marriage or have offspring as humans would. Instead, when a dwarf is exceedingly pleased with his workmanship his pride bursts forth from his head as a sparkle of light and plants itself into the ground. A few years later the sparkle of light forms into a fully grown bearded dwarf and he dusts himself off, stretches, grabs a tool, and begins working. Dwarves tend not to pay attention to where their sparks of light land, or who their particular offspring are, instead all of the dwarf community just works and teaches the newly dusted dwarves as needed.

The Dwarf of Kindess and Caring
That was the way of things in the dwarf realm for as long as anyone could remember, except with Emlirn. Emlirn had a father, Dwedar, whose work on a particular bed was so very pleasing to him that he kept watch over the patch of dirt where his light spark fell. Dwedar spoke to the patch and would set his wonderfully made bed up beside the slowly forming dirt patch and sleep by it every night.
Nobody knows if it was because Emlirn was especially slow growing for no particular reason, or if it was because Dwedar devoted so much of his free time to talking to him, but Emlirn stayed in the ground for exactly ten years! Most dwarves would dust themselves off and begin work anywhere from one to four years after the light spark planted them. Though, dwarves didn't really know how long it took since none of them cared to pay that much attention. Dwedar was the first real father any dwarf ever had and because of this Emlirn felt loved in a way that no dwarf before him. This gave him a sense of kindness and caring for others. Most dwarves weren't selfish per say, they just went about their work and devoted themselves to their tasks.
Emlirn's kindness and caring for others changed the whole dwarf community. For the first time in the history of dwarves, they stopped and took notice of things other than their own work. This didn't cause them to adopt the sense of caring and kindness that Emlirn had, but instead caused a sliver of fear and doubt to creep into their hearts.

The Dwarf of Kindess and Caring
They were still relatively benevolent creatures overall, but they started to talk about how Emlirn didn't belong.
A small rebellion broke out among the dwarves and grew, the rebellious dwarves no longer worked, but instead they plotted a way to get rid of Emlirn because his difference changed their way of life. No dwarf had ever been killed, ever. Dwarves simply lived a few hundred years and then when they were ready to die, they simply fell apart becoming a pile of dirt and were no more. But the rebellion changed the hearts of some dwarves, the sliver of fear and doubt took root and became hatred. Seventeen dwarves in total decided that the real problem was not Emlirn, but Dwedar and they took their tools and set about to kill him.
Kill him they did, but at such a great cost. Each of the seventeen who took the life of Dwedar were instantly turned to rock. Their vile expressions frozen in plain sight to all who looked upon the rock. Today that is where ring rock stands because time has eroded the forms of the dwarves away and all that remains is a lumpy ring around the spot where Dwedar fell to the dirt. A reminder that dwarves should never kill another dwarf.

The Dwarf of Kindess and Caring
But that is only the tale of Dwedar and this is the tale of Emlirn. As soon as the death of his father became known to him Emlirn knew he would be next. Fearing his gifts of kindness and caring would be wasted if he stayed, Emlirn left the dwarf realm. The first dwarf to leave an never return. Emlirn was unaware of the dangers of the wild world and first came upon a Minotaur battle camp. He was unaccustomed to other creatures but his kindness and caring made him naive and trusting. Emlirn walked into the largest tent and found a table of lavish meats and drink. As he reached out to take a bone with some cooked meat he did not recognize, he heard a roar so loud and fierce that he fell over.
Emlirn tried to talk to the large beastly creature who loomed over him, but he soon realized that minotaurs do not speak the tongues of men and dwarf. Emlirn ran out of the camp looking back as he ran, and straight into the battle between greckles and minotaurs. Now, this battle was actually a game played between these peoples and the day was a day of festivities. However, minotaurs and greckles are both grumpy warrior creatures, and to anyone who isn't a minotaur or greckle seeing what Emlirn witnessed that day, they too would mistake it for a violent battle.

Emlirn dodged between hooves and rock feet running as fast as his tiny legs would carry him. Then he realized he wasn't running on anything at all, but was floating, being carried on a bed of light. It was the pixies who saw the poor Emlirn and took pity on him. They carried him to their secret land above the clouds and there he stayed for more years than he could count.
Emlirn studied magic from the king of the pixies and eventually became one of the greatest sorcerers the world of Midieville had ever known. He remained in the pixie realm hearing stories of the various peoples below. Knowing in his heart that one day he would be tasked with sharing his gifts of kindness and caring. Eventually, he decided it was time to leave his adopted kin. Emlirn set about to make peace with all creatures.
For hundreds of years Emlirn wandered the world learning all he could and helping different peoples of different races. He felt compassion for the griffins when their kingdom was destroyed and personally dealt with Racl the vile dragon/griffin creature. With all of Emlirn's magic and caring he could not turn Racl's heart around, so out of compassion for both Racl and the rest of Midieville, Emlirn placed a sleeping spell on Racl, one that would last for two ages. When Emlirn learned of a young sorceress by the name of Iniquitie he took an interest in her and tried to teach her the values of kindness and caring. His advice fell on deaf ears and Emlirn realized that Iniquitie would soon become a great evil in the world. Fearing for the land and all the creatures and peoples he loved so dearly, Emlirn sought help.

Emlirn did not have long to search, for in the land of men he came upon a young sorcerer who seemed to have even more kindness and caring than he himself. This young sorcerer was also searching for help to stop Iniquitie's evil. Together they went to many different lands finding other sorcerers of goodness. Eventually they were a team of 13 and they faced off against the sorceress Iniquitie. By that time she had grown so evil and powerful that her own existence was tied with the world. All of Midieville grew dark as she sapped the magic from the land and its peoples. The young sorcerer was wise and cunning, and he decided that it would take all 13 of them working together to save Midieville.
Iniquitie had taken up residence in the magenta forest, using the magic of the trees there to create a palace for her. With the powers of the 13 focused against Iniquitie, they were able to strip her of each of her spells one by one pressing them into the trees which became pages containing the spells in an ancient language. When Iniquitie had been stripped hollow from her magic, she warned them that if they killed her the world itself would die. The young sorcerer was aware of this and he had the other 12 grant him dominion over their powers.

This gave him the strength to turn Iniquitie into a box and the 12 used their strength to force the pages of her spells into that box. The box was now the greatest book of spells, collecting all the most powerful and amazing magic that once had been free in Midieville. Some magic still remained in the world and spells could be discovered on their own, but the spells within the book not only held magic, but evil and wickedness. The box was given a new name, the Spellbook, and the book forgot that her old name was Iniquitie.
The world was shaken and reality itself unstable by the dreadful evil of Iniquitie and her spells. The young sorcerer knew that the only way to combat this instability was that the 13 would have to keep the elements of reality in balance. Names are powerful and if he were to speak the name of Iniquitie again it would set her free from the shape of the box. The sorcerer renamed himself The Master Magician and with his new name he forgot his old name and the name of iniquitie.

The Master Magician gathered twelve trees, twelve jewels and twelve metals from all over the world and formed them together into twelve different staffs, each comprised of one type of wood, jewel and metal. These staffs held within them the power of stability over one element of reality: Earth, Fire, Air, Water, Flora, Fauna, Weather, Time, Day, Night, Light, and Shadow. The Master Magician gave a staff to each of the twelve along with a colored cloak and hat and finally a new name. A strange name to the land of Midieville. The twelve were no longer sorcerers, but wizards, the first wizards ever in the history of Midieville. Emlirn became Marvin the blue wizard whose staff kept weather in balance.
Since each of the twelve were different races The Master Magician decided that they should all look after a race not of their own kind. Marvin was given the humans to look after and he built himself a simple hut in the woods not far from the human city where he still resides to this day.
