Architectural Heritage and the Art of Civic Identity

Original artwork by Michael Lude for the 2017 Whitley County Community Guide cover. Professionally matted and framed for the Columbia City Chamber of Commerce permanent collection.
The 2017 Whitley County Courthouse Commission for the Whitley County Community Guide:
Columbia City, Churubusco, Larwill, & South Whitley.
In a distinguished 2017 collaboration, artist Michael Lude was commissioned to create the cover art for the Whitley County Community Guide. Working alongside Jennifer Zartman Romano and the Columbia City Chamber of Commerce, Lude produced a masterful rendering of the historic Whitley County Courthouse. To honor its cultural significance, the Chamber professionally matted and framed the original artwork, which now resides in their permanent collection. It hangs in the Chamber offices as a testament to the region's rich history, displayed alongside other curated works of historical local art.
Commission Your Own Legacy Piece
Elevate your organization’s profile or commemorate a milestone with a custom commission. Michael Lude specializes in capturing the unique character of local landmarks and civic heritage through high-quality, archival-grade artistry.

Representing Whitley County on the State Stage
Community Recognition & Publication

A feature from the Whitley County Historical Museum bulletin. The museum noted: “We are honored to have these two artists represent Whitley County on the State tree! This ornament features local legends and Native American treaty signers who helped form our county. Thank you, Michael and Jennifer Lude, for an awesome job!”
The 2018 Indiana State Museum "92 County Tree" Commission
In 2018, the Whitley County Historical Museum commissioned MJL Entwined Art to create a centerpiece ornament representing Whitley County at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis. As part of a prestigious annual tradition where all 92 counties contribute a custom piece to the museum’s massive Christmas tree, Michael and Jennifer Lude collaborated on a monumental one-foot diameter, double-sided ornament. This hand-painted piece serves as a visual archive, bridging the gap between the region's pioneering leaders and its original Native American inhabitants.
The Making of a 92-County Masterpiece
Designing and painting a one-foot diameter sphere presented a unique set of technical challenges, requiring a combination of historical research and specialized painting techniques.
-
Archival Mediums: The artists utilized high-pigment acrylics designed for durability, as these ornaments are intended to be curated and displayed as part of the museum's permanent holiday exhibition for years to come.
-
A Collaborative Effort: Jennifer and Michael worked in tandem—one focusing on the intricate fine-line detail of the Native American treaty signers, while the other captured the distinct character of Columbia City’s 20th-century legends.
-
Technical Specifications: To meet the museum's requirements for the 25-foot tree, the ornament had to balance size and weight, measuring exactly 12 inches in diameter to ensure it was visible from the museum's second-level mezzanine. Visit Indiana (.gov) +1
The Indiana State Museum "92 County Tree"

The centerpiece of the Indiana State Museum’s annual Celebration Crossing, the 92 County Tree stands 25 feet tall in the museum's Great Hall. Each year, the MJL Entwined Art 12-inch spherical ornament represents Whitley County, hanging prominently alongside contributions from every county across the state of Indiana.

We meticulously hand-drew the entire cover just like in the pre-graphic art era, and then utilized Adobe to enhance its beauty and infuse a modern touch while preserving the classic styles!
